thought studies

Our own essays and thought experiments, clearly labelled as opinion. They come from years of coaching people one conversation at a time, and they are meant to start an argument, not end one. Below them, Inside Brightside: honest notes on things we have built.

  1. Thought StudiesEssay5 min readif you could only say three sentences a dayImagine waking up tomorrow with a strange allowance: three spoken sentences, no more, until you sleep. No typing to get round it. What would you cut first, and what would you protect? We have been asking our coaches this question for a while, and their answers say a lot about what talk is for. When words are scarce, we spend them on people, not on filler. Speak a little more like that every day.
  2. Thought StudiesEssay5 min readthe room where nobody speaks English as a first languageA Kochi engineer, a Brazilian product lead, a German buyer and a Japanese supplier get on a call. Nobody in it learned English at home. And quite often, it goes beautifully. We think there is something in that room worth studying, and something in it that native speakers could borrow.Shared English works when everyone adjusts to be understood. That is a skill anyone can learn, native speakers included.
  3. Thought StudiesEssay5 min readwhat AI-written emails do to how we speak out loudPeople now meet our emails before they meet us. More and more, those emails are written with a machine's help, smooth and certain. Then the call happens, and the person on the other end meets a different voice. This essay is about that moment, and about who owns the words we send.A sentence becomes yours when you can say it aloud and stand behind it. Close the gap between page and voice.
  4. Thought StudiesEssay5 min readsilence as a sentenceWe coach people to speak. And yet some of the most important things our learners ever communicate are said with no words at all: the pause before a price, the question left hanging, the quiet that follows bad news. Silence is not the absence of a message. It is a sentence in its own right, and like any sentence, it can be clear or confusing.Silence always says something. Learn to read it kindly and to use it on purpose.
  5. Thought StudiesEssay6 min readtranslating yourself: thinking in one language, speaking in anotherMillions of professionals in India and the Gulf do a quiet piece of work every day. They think in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi or Arabic, and they speak in English. Something is lost in that crossing, and something, surprisingly, is gained. This essay is about both, and about the person who makes the crossing.Speaking a second language costs something and gives something. You can keep your self in both.
  6. Thought StudiesEssay5 min readwould you hire your own voice? Here is a thought experiment that most people avoid for as long as they can. Record yourself speaking for two minutes about your work. Then listen as if you were a stranger deciding whether to trust this person with a client, a team or a stage. What would you notice? And can you be fair to the person you hear?Listen to your recorded voice as a fair judge and a kind coach: notice what builds trust, then practise one thing.
